#047 The Apple

If you’ve ever met me, I’m sorry for a start. Moreover, however, you will have some awareness of my love for cider. In many ways it was only natural that I would move to the West Country, home of some of the country’s best.

As the name implies, The Apple Cider Boat sets sail to showcase some of the best ciders around. “This isn’t the nasty, chemically rubbish,” their site proclaims; so put those pseudo-alcopops away and come this way!

#025 Start The Bus

Drink. Food. Music. These three factors are fast becoming the central pillars in my evaluation of Bristol’s bars, pubs, and clubs. Enter Start The Bus, a venue that offers to satisfy all three of these desires.

Second bar I've covered whose name I found very confusing before moving to Bristol.

Second bar I’ve covered whose name I found very confusing before moving to Bristol.

Firstly, the drink. And there is a lot of that to choose from. Over a dozen draught options, from local cask ales to foreign lagers, and a solid selection of bottles besides. I have two modes when it comes to drinking: adventure and familiarity. I’m either excited to try something new, or happy to have something tried and tested. With Bus’s range from every-bar standards like Becks and Amstel to beers from as far afield as Brooklyn Brewery, there’s plenty of variety to wet your whistle.

#022 Copper Jacks Crafthouse

Good music and good drinks, what more can you ask for? Copper Jacks Crafthouse serves up both with a liberal helping of style at a great venue in the old city, on the corner of Clare Street and St Nick’s.

Copper Jacks? I 'ardly know 'er, Jacks!

As we entered at around eight o’clock, the place was already lively, with a crowd pleasing jazz combo up on stage. The classic architecture of the area really lends itself to the vibe of this place, something like a speak-easy with a flair for local beers, ales, and cider.

#020 The Woods

Mike

If you go down to The Woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise… unless, of course, if you’ve been following us around Bristol’s bars thus far and are used to something a little different.

Woods exterior: a mauve building set along a sloped street with signature signage.

I would describe its location as ‘on a hill’, but in Bristol that narrows nothing down.

Before I moved to what is officially Britain’s best city to live in and yet worst to drive in (don’t get me started), Rich would often times regale me with his fresh-out-of-Uni adventures here.

“… then we were drinking in The Woods, and–“

“Rich, we’re not teenagers any more. We’re allowed in bars and the like.”

#010 The Stable

Mike

“Bristol’s finest pizza, pies and cider” is the bold claim customers are met with on entering The Stable, self-proclaimed “Cathedral to Cider.” It’s probably a little early in our 100 for me to decidedly verify or refute that claim, but I’d like to think I’ve had enough of the three in my life to comment.

The Stable

You certainly won’t be wanting for choice among their charmingly locally themed and sourced food and drink. Particularly if cider’s your drink of choice (and, if you live in Bristol, and are going to The Stable, it probably is). A dozen or so draughts and at least a score of boxes, from dry to sweet and cloudy to sparkling, there’s plenty to try.
